Penn student shot at 38th, Sansom
Student released from hospital this morning
|
Two men unaffiliated with the University were also shot. All three were treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and are in stable condition.
Oishi -- who was shot in the thigh -- was released from the hospital this morning.
Reached this afternoon by phone, Oishi said, "I'm fine. I'm optimistic about my recovery, and thanks to everyone for their support and concern." She declined to comment further.
People in the area at the time of the shooting said that they heard between 6 and 8 gunshots and that they saw a man wearing a black puffy jacket and brandishing a silver gun running west on Sansom Street away from 38th.
Both Philadelphia and Penn police responded to the scene, and are working together in the investigation.
Two people left the scene with police, one in handcuffs, one apparently by choice.
College sophomore Oo Htaik heard gunshots and came to the scene shortly thereafter.
"We saw two bodies lying down" about seven feet from each other, Htaik said. "One distinctly had at least one bullet hole in his foot."
West Philadelphia resident James Martin was present at the scene when an ambulance first arrived. "I saw two bodies laying in the street," Martin said.
Oishi "was in the wrong place at the wrong time," University spokeswoman Lori Doyle said.
Penn President Amy Gutmann wrote in a statement today that "the safety of our students has been and continues to be our number one priority," citing recent safety measures including additional police patrols, security cameras and lighting.
In a statement made today detailing measures taken to help safeguard campus, Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush added that officials "will continue to allocate additional resources towards target-hardening Penn's on and off campus environment."
The statement encouraged students to take advantage of escorts provided by the University's 898-WALK and 898-RIDE services.
The shooting was the second on Penn's campus in the last month. Early on the morning of Dec. 25, William Hurt, 25, of Philadelphia was shot and killed at the Philly Diner on the 3900 block of Walnut Street.
Jonathan Morales, 28, of Upper Darby, Pa., has been charged in the Philly Diner slaying.

I don't know WHAT "witness" is talking about, but that is not the case at all. I live at 38/Walnut and saw the incident go down. 3 people were shot: two black males and a Penn student (the Penn student, it appeared, was caught in the crossfire and hit in the thigh). (Continued…)

Uh, what? The date on the article says 1/14 but I'm sure I would have heard about this had it been Saturday morning. Doesn't look to have been picked up yet by any of the local stations. (Continued…)

I heard the shots late last night. It was late saturday night at like 2:55 am or so. I heard 6 shots, 1, a pause, and then 5. May God help us all.

The dateline is wrong - this happened around 2:55am on SUNDAY morning. I Google'd "University of Pennsylvania" at Google News and found a short blurb about the incident from CBS's local affiliate. (Continued…)

There is no way to clean up our society! Lawful
guns are stolen from homes and shops and sold to people who do not use them responsibly. The injuries are not life threatening but will ruin your day or possibly semester. (Continued…)

It's not Rush's fault, and she shouldn't lose her job over the out-of-control crime at Penn. Check the DPS website--she's proud as can be about the positive articles written by other newspapers about how crime isn't as bad as it was in 1996--after all, no students have been really seriously hurt by crime here at Penn. Everyone was saying it was a matter of time until a student was seriously injured.
And now it has happened.
Wonder what the administration's response will be. (Continued…)
